Geography of Lansing

The geography of Lansing adds to the charm of the city. The total area of Lansing is 91.3 square kilometer. The figuration takes into account the two 425 Agreements with Meridian Township and Alaiedon Township. But the 425 Agreements with Delta Township are not included. Lansing is located on the south central parts. The city of Lansing is located at the meeting point of the Red Cedar River and the Grand River.


The area of Lansing Charter Township is occupied by Lansing. Tracts of land of Windor Township and Delta Charter Township are annexed by Lansing.

The elevation of Lansing is 830 feet above the level of sea in the region stretching along Grand River and 890 feet above the level of the sea along Northrup Street in the southern parts of Lansing.



As per Michigan law the 425 Agreements are temporary agreements of land sharing and not official annexations.

The Grand River runs through downtown Lansing and the Red Cedar River runs through the Michigan State University campus. Lake Lansing and Park Lake are the two lakes in the city, lying to the northeast to Lansing. The area of Lake Lansing is 500 acres and is a haven for the fishermen, swimmers and boaters in summer.

Along with an interesting Lansing geography, the city of Lansing offers several places of interests for the tourists. Some of the tourist attractions in Lansing are the State Capitol, the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum, Potter Zoo Park, Michigan Women’s Historical Center & Hall of Fame, Michigan Museum of Surveying, Michigan Historical Museum, Impression 5 Science Center, Carl. G. Fenner Nature Center, Kresge Art Museum, Beaumont Tower and Abrams Planetarium.
