Government of Lansing

The Government of Lansing is a Mayor-council government. Most of the administrative powers of the city are in the hands of the mayor. With the approval of the council the mayor executes the administrative responsibilities like administration and drafting of city budget, appointing the department heads and other responsibilities. Currently, the service term of the mayor is 4 years.


The City Council of Lansing is constituted of 8 members. 4 members are elected at citywide and members are elected from the 4 wards. Each ward of the city is equally represented in the process and some of the neighborhoods which are underrepresented get a chance of representation in the City Council.



Virgil Bernero is the current mayor of Lansing. He took the office in 2006 on 1st January. The members of the City Council are Carol Wood, Derrick Quiney, Brian Jeffries, Council Vice President, Kathie Dunbar, Tim Kaltenbach, William Matt, Sandy Allen and Harold Leeman.

The city of Lansing is mostly located within the Michigan 8th Congressional district’s boundaries. This district is represented by Mike.J. Rogers, the Republican congressman. A small part of Lansing is within the boundaries of Michigan’s 7th congressional district, represented by Tim Walberg.

Lansing is in Michigan Senate’s 23rd district at the state level. Gretchen Whitmer, the Democratic state senator represents the senate. The part of Lansing falling under Eaton County is under the 24th district of Michigan Senate. Lansing lies within 71st, 69th, 68th and 67th districts of the Michigan State House of Representatives.

Many courts and county offices are located in Lansing, making it important in the state despite not being a county seat.
