Wildlife in Lansing

Lansing, the capital of the state of Michigan beckons travelers with its natural beauty and hi-tech charm. Along with the rivers, lakes, monuments and museums of Lansing the wildlife in Lansing is a major draw for the tourists visiting Lansing.

Wildlife in Lansing is one of the chief attractive features of the city. In 1986 from the Friends of the Zoo Society, the Potter Park Zoological Society evolved. This organization is a non-profit and private organization, which raise the money in support of the zoo.


A short overview regarding the mission of the Potter Park Zoological Society:
  • Preservation, protection and exhibition of animal kingdom and to build up a harmony between nature and man
  • They strive to provide quality entertainment for the visitors who can travel back to the pure essence of nature. Their motto along with conservation is recreation and education for the people.




Different kind of animals is there in the Potter Park Zoological Society. The animals that reside in the zoo include yak, wolves, tufted deer, tiger, tamarins, superb starling,spider monkeys, snow leopards, Sicilian burro, red pandas, porcupine, pheasants, penguins, Patagonian, maras, pallas’ cat, otters, ostriches, oryx, muntjac, mongoose, lemur, mur kats, mandrills, llama, lions, lemurs, king vulture, kangaroos, green-winged macaw, green iguana, emus, eagle owl, caribou, camels, Burmese python, bongos, black rhinos, binturongs, big horn sheep, bald eagle, arctic fox and aldabra.

There are beautiful gardens in the zoo which are both relaxing. These gardens attract birds and butterflies to the neighborhood. The Barnyard and the petting zoo are the two attractive features of the zoo. Here the kids can enjoy themselves. There are saanen goats from the country of Switzerland, huge Aldabra tortoises, toy china pigs, reindeer, burros, yaks and pygmy goats here.

There are several reptiles and birds in the Bird & Reptile House in Potter park Zoological Park. The animals include Bali Minah Bird, owls, macaws, gila monsters, emerald tree snakes and boas here.
